Sweetheart holds a prized, highly celebrated slot within the youth and coming-of-age index of QueerFilmHub.com. The story centers on AJ (Nell Barlow, in a BIFA-winning breakout performance), a socially awkward, environmentally conscious, and fiercely cynical 17-year-old lesbian. Dressed in baggy, Billie Eilish-style attire and planning a gap year to "knit jumpers for elephants," AJ is dragged kicking and screaming on a week-long family vacation to a quintessentially tacky coastal caravan holiday park in Dorset. Flanked by her overly enthusiastic, micro-managing mother Tina (Jo Hartley), her deeply pregnant older sister Lucy (Sophia Di Martino), and Lucy's patient boyfriend Steve (Samuel Anderson), AJ expects the trip to be an absolute, Wi-Fi-less hell on earth.

Her defense mechanism of sheer teenage misery is instantly shattered when she locks eyes with Isla (Ella-Rae Smith), the impossibly cool, sun-loving, and fiercely confident resident holiday park lifeguard.

Intrigued by AJ's offbeat humor and quirky worldview, Isla pulls AJ out of her shell and invites her into the inner social circle of the resort's seasonal staff. To fit in, a terrified but infatuated AJ fakes being 18, navigating a messy, intoxicating maze of adolescent parties, romantic rivalry, and hormonal confusion. Underneath the sun-drenched, comedic surface of beach parties and family bickering runs a tender, bittersweet undercurrent about a splintered family trying to heal after a parental separation, and a young woman learning how to stand firmly in her own skin as she encounters the breathtaking high of her very first love.

πŸ’‘ Did You Know? 🧠
Semi-Autobiographical Origins: Director Marley Morrison based the script heavily on her own teenage memories of being dragged to traditional British caravan parks, capturing the exact blend of crushing adolescent boredom and intense secret crushes.

A Marvel Connection: The film features a wonderful supporting performance from Sophia Di Martino (playing AJ's sister Lucy), who filmed the indie project shortly before gaining massive international fame as Sylvie in Marvel Studios' Loki series.

A Refreshing Departure: Unlike many classic British working-class dramas or older queer films, Sweetheart completely bypasses the trauma of "coming out" or dealing with familial homophobia. AJ's family is completely fine with her being gay; their conflict stems entirely from her typical teenage moodiness and existential clashing with her mom.
