🎬 "Fanny Lye Deliver'd" (2019) is a dark, fog-drenched "Puritan Western" that transports us to 1657, to an isolated farm in Shropshire. Fanny Lye (Maxine Peake) lives a harsh, joyless life with her elderly, orthodox husband, John (Charles Dance). Their world, ruled by discipline and prayer, is turned upside down by the sudden arrival of a pair of young, naked fugitives who bring with them the scent of freedom, sin, and rebellion. The film is a fascinating study of the awakening of female subjectivity. Initially stifled by patriarchy and religious rigor, under the influence of these intruders, Fanny begins to question everything she has ever believed to be the only truth. It is a bloody and brutal path to freedom, where the line between salvation and perdition is thinner than a knife's edge. Director Thomas Clay has created a visually stunning film (shot on 35mm film) that celebrates the moment when a woman's voice finally begins to break through the silence of the ages. 🎬
