Set among the wealthy, elite prep school teenagers of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) engage in vicious, manipulative games of sexual conquest and emotional destruction to relieve their boredom.

Kathryn strikes a high-stakes bet with Sebastian: if he can successfully seduce Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the headmaster's virtuous daughter who published an article praising abstinence, Kathryn will grant him full access to her own bed. If he fails, Kathryn receives Sebastian's prized 1956 Jaguar. Simultaneously, Kathryn uses Sebastian to corrupt naive newcomer Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair) as revenge against an ex-lover. However, the icy game unravels when Sebastian unexpectedly develops genuine feelings for Annette, igniting Kathryn's ruthless retaliation.
