My Take:
The rules are simple: seduce, destroy, win. Moving the 18th-century Dangerous Liaisons to a New York elite prep school was a stroke of genius. Kathryn and Sebastian are step-siblings who treat people like pawns in their game. While the main plot is heterosexual, the film breathes queer energy—from the legendary kiss between Kathryn and Cecile to the character of Eric and the gay blackmail subplot.
What's Captivating: Style and audacity. Sarah Michelle Gellar as the "puppet master" is brilliant—she’s one of the greatest antagonists in teen movie history. The soundtrack, led by Bittersweet Symphony, is an absolute classic that instantly transports you into a world of luxury and corruption.
A Word of Caution: The film is a product of its time—some of the manipulations and behaviors are considered highly problematic today. However, it's a movie about "bad people," so their actions are meant to be controversial.
Verdict: 8.5/10 🍷🖤
Dark, stylish, and devilishly smart. This is the film that defined "guilty pleasure" for an entire generation.
🔍 Did you know...?
The famous kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair made pop culture history and won the MTV Movie Award for "Best Kiss." Interestingly, the two actresses remain close friends to this day, and in 2020 (over 20 years after the premiere!), they recreated the scene in a safe "pandemic" version through plexiglass, which went viral. Also, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, who played a couple on screen, were a real-life couple during filming and got married shortly after.
