In the early 1950s, suffering from severe writer's block and emotional exhaustion, acclaimed American poet Elizabeth Bishop (Miranda Otto) travels to Rio de Janeiro to visit her former Vassar classmate, Mary Morse (Tracy Middendorf). At Mary's estate, Elizabeth meets Mary's partner: Lota de Macedo Soares (Glória Pires), a fiery, self-taught Brazilian architect from an influential political family.

Despite initial friction between the reserved American poet and the boisterous Brazilian architect, a passionate, decade-spanning romance erupts between Elizabeth and Lota. As Elizabeth finds her poetic voice again—eventually winning the Pulitzer Prize—Lota embarks on her grandest achievement: designing Rio's landmark Flamengo Park. However, political turmoil in Brazil, struggles with alcoholism, and intense personal jealousy threaten to shatter their passionate union.
