To the Stars (2019) occupies a deeply poetic, atmospheric niche within the modern historical index of QueerFilmHub.com. Directed with a delicate, patient hand by Martha Stephens, the film bypasses the glossy nostalgia often granted to the 1960s, choosing instead to capture the stifling, dusty reality of an isolated Oklahoma farming town. The narrative centers on Iris Deerborne (Kara Hayward), a reclusive, deeply insecure teenage girl who suffers from chronic bullying due to an untreated medical condition and an overbearing, hyper-religious mother. Iris has spent her youth shrinking into the background, retreating to a secluded pond to escape her painful day-to-day existence.

Iris's highly controlled, isolating world is radically disrupted by the sudden arrival of Maggie Richmond (Liana Liberato), a fiercely charismatic, enigmatic, and city-bred new student who moves to town with her family.

Rather than joining the local popular cliques, Maggie is immediately drawn to Iris, fiercely shielding her from local bullies and introducing her to a parallel universe of confidence, makeup, and emotional freedom. As the hot summer months drag on, their profound platonic attachment quietly shifts into a much deeper, intense, and emotionally intimate romantic territory. However, beneath Maggie's glamorous, untouchable armor lies a heavy web of secrets and past trauma that she is running from. When the strict, hyper-patriarchal community begins to unravel Maggie's mysteries and target her independent spirit, Iris must find the strength to step out from the shadows, anchoring a beautifully bittersweet climax about the permanent mark left behind by our very first grand love.

💡 Did You Know? (Czy wiesz, że?) 🧠
A Moonrise Kingdom Reunion: The film marks a brilliant indie reunion for lead star Kara Hayward. A full seven years after her legendary breakout performance as the young, binoculars-wearing Suzy Bishop in Wes Anderson’s masterwork Moonrise Kingdom (2012), Hayward delivers a beautifully mature, emotionally raw performance here as Iris.

Sundance Dramatic Selection: The movie was highly celebrated by independent film critics upon arrival. It made its grand world premiere in the highly competitive U.S. Dramatic Competition section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where it was widely praised for its gorgeous cinematography and intimate pacing.

The Black-and-White Choice: Director Martha Stephens originally fought hard to release the film entirely in a crisp, high-contrast black-and-white format to evoke the classic, sterile feel of 1950s/60s television and cinema (reminiscent of The Last Picture Show). While it was eventually released commercially in color, the film's stark framing, deep shadow play, and wide-open landscape shots heavily preserve that original arthouse silhouette.

An Elite Character-Actor Ensemble: Beyond its brilliant young leads, the film boasts an incredible supporting cast of prestige television veterans, including Tony Hale (Veep), Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire), and Malin Åkerman (Watchmen), all playing beautifully against type in heavy, grounded dramatic roles.
