Growing up in a fiercely conservative and rigid post-war England, Chris always felt entirely disconnected from the female identity forced upon him by society. Lacking the vocabulary, representation, or social permission to understand his reality as a transgender man, Chris spends his youth trying to navigate a deeply suffocating world. Amidst this internal isolation, Chris finds a profound, radiant lifeline in Julie—a relationship that quickly blossoms into a passionate, deeply loving same-sex romance.

However, as the years press onward, the heavy, constant pressure of societal conformity and the fear of public exile begin to take a devastating toll.

Unable to envision a viable future on the margins of society, Julie ultimately yields to heteronormative expectations, choosing a conventional marriage to a man. The narrative beautifully fractures across time, tracking both characters over several decades into their older years. Chris (portrayed in later life by queer model Elliott Sailors) is left to quietly reflect on a lifetime spent in the shadows, examining the deep-seated remnants of an unfulfilled love and the bittersweet reality of a trans identity realized in the twilight of life.

💡 Did You Know? 🧠
A Transgender Auteur: Writer and director Jake Graf is one of the UK’s most prominent transgender filmmakers and activists. Graf wrote the piece to shine a light on an older generation of trans individuals who were forced to live entire lifetimes without the medical, legal, or social frameworks available today.

Casting Across Boundaries: To capture the complex gender dynamics and historical layers of Chris’s journey, Graf cast Duncan James (best known as a member of the British boy band Blue) to play Chris in younger fantasy/dream sequences, while gender-fluid international model Elliott Sailors masterfully portrays Chris in adulthood.

Global Festival Success: Dusk was a major critical darling on the LGBTQ+ international circuit, screening at over 100 festivals worldwide—including prestigious stops at BFI Flare, Iris Prize, and Frameline—and taking home numerous awards for Best Short Film.
