Stella (Olympia Dukakis) and Dotty (Brenda Fricker) are a devoted lesbian couple living in Maine who have shared a deep, loving relationship for over thirty-one years. Stella is foul-mouthed, fiercely protective, and adventurous, while Dotty is gentle, sweet, and legally blind. When Dotty suffers an accident, her well-meaning but homophobic granddaughter Molly (Kristin Booth) forces her into a nursing home and assumes power of attorney.

Refusing to let their partnership be broken, Stella breaks Dotty out of the facility. Together, they steal a pickup truck and hit the road bound for Nova Scotia, Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal, determined to finalize their lifelong commitment. Along the journey, they pick up Prentice (Ryan Doucette), a young male hitchhiker and aspiring dancer returning home to visit his dying mother. Together, the trio forms an unlikely family, confronting old age, mortality, and legal barriers with humor and love.
