👑 REVIEW: Cloudburst (2011)
My Take:
Meet Dot and Stella—a couple of 31 years living in Maine. When Dot is forcibly moved into a nursing home by her granddaughter, Stella (fearless and swearing like a sailor) decides to bust her out. They head for Canada in a stolen pickup truck to get married and reclaim their right to be together. Along the way, they pick up a young hitchhiker who becomes a witness to their extraordinary bond. This film is wild, vulgar, incredibly funny, and ultimately—heartbreakingly beautiful.
What's Captivating: The dream acting duo. Brenda Fricker (as the gentle Dot) and Olympia Dukakis (as the explosive Stella) create one of the most authentic couples in lesbian cinema history. You’ll love Stella from the first minute for her sharp tongue and boundless loyalty. The film isn't afraid to show aging, senior sexuality, and the fight against a system that tries to strip the elderly of their dignity.
A Word of Caution: Bring tissues. Stella’s humor will have you crying with laughter, but the final journey to their destination is emotionally heavy. It hits straight in the heart, especially if you value stories about "til death do us part" love.
Verdict: 9.2/10 👵🛣️💕
The ultimate proof that true love has no expiration date. A must-watch that will make you want to call someone you love.

The film is based on Thom Fitzgerald's stage play (who also directed the movie). It won over 30 audience awards at film festivals worldwide—from San Francisco to Atlanta. Oscar-winner Olympia Dukakis stated in interviews that Stella was one of her favorite roles in her career, as she rarely saw scripts where an older woman was allowed to be so strong, foul-mouthed, and multi-dimensional.
