Clara (Gemma Arterton) and Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan) are two mysterious women on the run from a centuries-old vampiric brotherhood. Posing as sisters, they are actually mother and daughter who have survived together for over two hundred years on human blood. While Clara operates as a fiercely pragmatic protector and sex worker, Eleanor is a brooding, compassionate soul who targets only the elderly and terminally ill to grant them a peaceful death.

Seeking refuge in a bleak English coastal town, Clara seduces a lonely man named Noel (Daniel Mays) and converts his run-down guesthouse, the Byzantium, into a makeshift brothel. Meanwhile, Eleanor meets Frank (Caleb Landry Jones), a local young man battling leukemia. As Eleanor confesses her true immortal nature through her writings, her desire for honesty clashes with Clara's strict rules of secrecy, ultimately drawing the deadly, patriarchal vampire Brethren directly to their doorstep.
