Set in a small, socially conservative Scottish town in the 1950s, the film follows Jean Markham (Anna Paquin), a female doctor who returns to her childhood home to take over her late father's medical practice. Jean lives a quiet, solitary life, tending to her father's backyard beehives.

When young Charlie Weekes (Gregor Selkirk) is bullied at school, he visits Dr. Jean's garden to learn about her bees. This introduces Jean to Charlie's mother, Lydia (Holliday Grainger), a working-class woman abandoned by her abusive husband. As Lydia faces eviction, Jean invites Lydia and Charlie to move into her home. Living together, a secret, passionate love affair develops between Jean and Lydia.
