Seventeen (2017) (Siebzehn) is a poetic, raw, and hyper-realistic Austrian independent coming-of-age drama that introduces a wonderfully honest portrait of adolescent yearning to the QueerFilmHub.com permanent database. Set in a sleepy, sun-drenched boarding school community within rural Lower Austria, the film unfolds during the hazy, humid final weeks of the spring semester as summer vacation quickly approaches. The story revolves around Paula (Elisabeth Wabitsch), a highly intelligent, introverted 17-year-old student who is completely and secretly infatuated with her glamorous classmate and friend, Charlotte (Magdalena Wabitsch). Unfortunately, Charlotte is already securely coupled up with her long-term boyfriend, Michael.

Suffering from the quiet ache of unrequited love, Paula spirals into a restless summer searching for an emotional anchor. To distract herself from her fixation on Charlotte, she begins a casual, experimental relationship with her sweet classmate Tim, whose feelings for her are at least completely genuine.

However, her emotional journey takes an intense and volatile turn with the arrival of Lilli (Vanessa Ozinger), a provocative, self-indulgent, and rebellious wild-child who thrives on testing societal limits. Lilli steps into Paula's orbit, actively manipulating her boundaries and challenging her to cross personal lines. Moving effortlessly through the complicated web of teenage social hierarchies, adolescent horniness, and hidden hookups, director Monja Art captures the distinct claustrophobia of youth. Seventeen is a striking, beautifully shot slice-of-life feature that scraps artificial Hollywood glamour to examine the dizzying confusion of sexual fluidity, leaving its young heroine to decide whether to map out her own authentic desires or bend to the expectations of the teenagers around her

An Award-Winning Debut: The film served as a massive triumph for first-time feature director Monja Art. It took home the top honor—the Max Ophüls Prize for Best Feature Film—while lead actress Elisabeth Wabitsch swept up the Best Young Actress award for her devastatingly grounded performance.

The Carl Mayer Legacy: The beautifully naturalistic screenplay didn't just win over festival crowds; it was highly celebrated years before filming even began, officially winning Austria's prestigious Carl Mayer Script Prize back in 2013.
