In 1970s and 1980s Walnut Creek, California, Mary Griffith (Sigourney Weaver) is a devout Presbyterian mother raising her children according to strict Christian doctrine. Her life shifts drastically when her younger son, Bobby (Ryan Kelley), confides to his brother that he is gay.

Believing homosexuality is a mortal sin, Mary subjects Bobby to emotional pressure, conversion therapy, and persistent prayer to "cure" him. Unable to gain his mother's acceptance and burdened by deep guilt and depression, Bobby moves to Portland. Devastated by the ongoing rejection, Bobby dies by suicide in 1983.
