👑 THE SCARY OF SIXTY-FIRST (2021)

“The truth is hidden in the walls, and the walls are watching.”VIBE CHECK:Giallo-Inspired / Conspiracy Thriller / Psychological Horror / Retro-Apartment Horror THE PLOT:Mismatched roommates Noelle (Madeline Quinn) and Addie (Betsey Brown) score a suspiciously cheap, oddly arranged duplex in Manhattan. Their lives unravel when a mysterious, aloof stranger (Dasha Nekrasova) reveals the apartment once belonged to notorious sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. While Noelle falls into a drug-fueled, romantic obsession with the stranger and her rabbit-hole theories, Addie appears to be physically possessed by the spirits of Epstein’s victims, leading to a descent into hyper-sexualized, manic depravity. THE QUEER & RADICAL ANGLE: Queer Conspiracy Bond: The film is a consummate piece of queer cinema where the romantic and sexual connection between Noelle and "The Girl" is inextricably linked to their shared obsession with uncovering the truth. Radical Irreverence: Winning the Teddy Award at the Berlinale for Best Feature Film, it is radical in its refusal to be "polite". It uses the tools of exploitation cinema to confront the untouchable power of the elite through a lens of dark, often offensive irony. Subverting Victimhood: The film provocatively explores the idea of "overidentification" with trauma. By showing Addie literally possessed by the past, it critiques how we consume real-life horror stories as a form of "doom-surfing" entertainment. WHY IT KILLS:It is a "stylish, daring thriller" that wears its influences—Stanley Kubrick and Roman Polanski—on its sleeve. The lo-fi, 16mm aesthetic and a pounding synth score create a hypnotic atmosphere of isolation and emptiness that perfectly mirrors the paranoia of the digital age. It is intentionally shocking, icky, and "camp" in a way that forces you to either lean in or look away from the "fetid miasma" of our culture. PARANOIA SCORE: 9.2 / 10 👁️💊
