“In the steam, there are no masks—only the truth.”

VIBE CHECK:
Danish Noir / Romantic Realism / Atmospheric / Provocative

THE PLOT:
Johan is a man who thrives in the anonymous, hedonistic world of Copenhagen’s gay bathhouses and parties. He is comfortable in the shadows until he meets William, a charismatic transgender man. Their connection forces Johan out of his cycle of instant gratification and into a vulnerable, "spiny" romance. As they navigate their evolving feelings, the film explores the friction between the bodies we inhabit and the people we desire. It’s a slow-burn journey through sweat, neon, and the quiet silence of a cold Danish morning.

THE QUEER & RADICAL ANGLE:

Beyond the Labels: The film is radical in how it explores "queer affinity" without relying on tired tropes. It looks at the specific, sometimes messy intersections of cis-gay and trans-masculine identities, treating their attraction with both immense heat and somber sensitivity.

The Body as a Site of Power: By setting much of the film in a bathhouse, director Mathias Broe reclaims a space often associated with fleeting encounters and turns it into a theater of deep emotional revelation.

WHY IT KILLS:
The chemistry between Magnus Juhl Andersen (Johan) and Nina Terese Rask (William) is magnetic and raw. The cinematography is world-class, using strobe effects and heavy shadows to create a world that feels both claustrophobic and infinitely expansive. It was a breakout hit at Sundance 2025 because it doesn't offer easy answers—it just offers a mirror to the complex reality of modern queer love.

SENSORY SCORE: 9.1 / 10 🧖‍♂️💨
