👑 RŪRANGI (2020)

“You can’t find where you’re going until you face where you’ve been.”VIBE CHECK:Homecoming / Authentic / Kiwi Realism / Healing / AncestralTHE PLOT:After a decade away in Auckland living as a trans activist, Caz Davis (Elz Carrad) returns to his remote, conservative dairy-farming hometown of Rūrangi. He left abruptly as a teenager, before his transition, and hasn't spoken to his father since. Now, he must navigate the "emotional earthquakes" of reconnecting with an estranged father who missed his transition, a best friend (Āwhina-Rose Henare Ashby) reconnecting with her Māori heritage, and an ex-boyfriend (Arlo Green) who is surprised to find his feelings for Caz haven't faded. THE QUEER & RADICAL ANGLE: Nothing About Us Without Us: The film is a landmark of radical representation; all trans characters are played by trans actors, and over half the cast and crew identify as gender diverse. Decolonizing Identity: It is radical in how it weaves together trans identity with Māori culture (Tangata Iroitī), showing how reclaiming one's gender can be deeply tied to reclaiming one's indigenous roots and land. Beyond the "Tragedy" Trope: While it deals with heavy themes, the film is "refreshingly non-judgmental" and optimistic, refusing to let Caz be a victim of his circumstances. WHY IT KILLS:It’s a "slow-burning character study" that trades Hollywood melodrama for "brutal honesty" and "warmth". Elz Carrad delivers a mesmerizing debut performance that captures the exact moment a person’s city-built armor begins to crack in the face of family. The cinematography captures the "lyrical poetry" of the New Zealand countryside—all dappled skies and wide fields—making the setting a character in itself. It’s a film that proves that while transitioning is a personal journey, the most radical act can be rebuilding the bridges you thought you had to burn. AUTHENTICITY SCORE: 9.6 / 10 🌿🇳🇿
