👑 REVIEW: The Girl King (2015)

My Take:
Queen Christina of Sweden was "queer" before the term even existed, and Mika Kaurismäki tries to show that without sugar-coating it. This is the story of a woman raised to be a king from childhood, who hated corsets and dreamed of modernizing Sweden. The central point is her passionate and risky relationship with her lady-in-waiting, Countess Ebba Sparre. It’s cinema about the struggle for personal freedom in a world where the crown is a golden cage.

What's Captivating: Malin Buska as Christina is a volcano of energy. Her character is wild, intellectual, and completely unpredictable—challenging the church, politicians, and tradition alike. The scenes between her and Sarah Gadon (Ebba) are filled with tension and authentic desire; the chemistry between the leads is one of the production's strongest points.

A Word of Caution: The film occasionally suffers from typical historical biopic issues—trying to fit too many political subplots into a short runtime, which makes some secondary characters feel flat. The budget doesn't always allow for epic scale, so at times it feels more like a stage play than a Hollywood blockbuster.

Verdict: 7.5/10 🏳️‍🌈
An intriguing portrait of an icon who wasn't afraid to say "no" to the entire world. A must-watch for fans of stories about strong women.

🔍 Did you know...?
The real Queen Christina remains a controversial figure to this day. After abdicating and converting to Catholicism (a massive scandal at the time), she moved to Rome, became a patron of the arts, and... began dressing almost exclusively in men's clothing. In the 1960s, when her tomb in the Vatican was opened, scientists conducted tests to see if Christina might have been intersex. However, the results were inconclusive, leaving her mystery intact.
