👑 REVIEW: Daddy Issues (2018)

My Take:
Daddy Issues looks like eye candy, but it has quite a bit of bitterness inside. We follow Maya, a young artist who falls in love with the mysterious and older Jasmine. However, it quickly becomes clear that this relationship has a darker side, and both women are struggling with past traumas. It’s a story about looking for love in the wrong places and how much our relationships with our parents influence whom we choose to love.

What's Captivating: The aesthetics! The film is saturated with pastel colors, neons, and great shots, which contrasts sharply with the heavy subject matter. The chemistry between the leads is palpable from the start, and Maya’s character is written with so much empathy that it’s easy to relate to her.

A Word of Caution: The title doesn’t lie—the film heavily explores toxic relationships and emotional dependency. Some moments might be frustrating if you expect characters to make purely logical decisions, but that’s where the realism of the film lies.

Verdict: 7.2/10 🎨🏳️‍🌈
A visual feast with a strong message about growing up and letting go of the past. Perfect for an indie movie night.

🔍 Did you know...?
The film was praised for its authentic portrayal of the young artist community in Los Angeles. Director Amara Cash opted for a predominantly female crew, which translated into a specific, intimate atmosphere on set. Interestingly, the film became a minor phenomenon at LGBTQ+ film festivals, winning awards for directing and for Madison Lawlor’s performance, who worked hard to make her character a three-dimensional artist rather than just a "sad girl."
