👑 REVIEW: Curiosa (2019)

My Take:
Paris, 1895. To pay off her father's debts, Marie de Régnier marries the poet Henri de Régnier, but her heart (and body) belongs to Pierre Louÿs—a traveler and erotic photographer. While it’s a story about a love triangle, it’s primarily about female autonomy. Marie becomes a muse but also an active participant in Pierre’s artistic experiments, discovering her sexuality in a way that feels bold even by today’s standards.

What's Captivating: The "vintage porn" aesthetic presented in a very elegant manner. The cinematography is stunning—sepia tones, grainy textures, and a meticulous attention to period detail make you feel like you can smell the old paper and photo developer. Noémie Merlant (of Portrait of a Lady on Fire fame) delivers an incredibly magnetic performance.

A Word of Caution: This is a very daring film. There is a lot of nudity and many erotic scenes, so it is strictly for adult audiences. The pacing is typically French—leisurely, focused on mood, glances, and atmosphere.

Verdict: 7.5/10 📷 liberation
A sensual journey to Belle Époque Paris. A beautiful portrait of a woman who refused to be just a background for the men in her life.

🔍 Did you know...?
The film is based on a true story! Marie de Régnier and Pierre Louÿs were real historical figures, and their letters and daring photographs have survived to this day, serving as the basis for the script. Director Lou Jeunet wanted the film to be more than just a biography; she wanted it to be a tribute to the birth of erotic photography. Interestingly, many of the "photograph" shots in the film were styled after Pierre Louÿs’s authentic nudes, which caused major scandals in Parisian society at the time.
