👑 REVIEW: Cicada Song (2019)

My Take:
We’re heading to a farming town in rural California. Annabelle is a young woman who arrives in the area searching for her missing friend. However, she quickly realizes that no one in town wants to talk about what happened, and the local community is fiercely protective of its secrets. In the background, there are themes of unusual inheritance, land disputes, and complex relationships that push the boundaries of a traditional mystery. The film builds tension slowly, using the droning sound of cicadas and the oppressive summer heat to amplify the growing unease.

What's Captivating: Originality and casting. The film has a distinct, almost dreamlike atmosphere. The cast includes Lyndsy Fonseca and the iconic queer performer Kim Chi (of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame), which adds a unique flair to the production. The way the film explores identity within a hermetic, small-town setting is particularly thought-provoking.

A Word of Caution: This is a very niche indie film. The plot can be convoluted at times, leaning more into symbolism than straightforward answers. If you’re looking for a high-budget Hollywood thriller, the raw, independent nature of this production might feel a bit sparse—it’s definitely an "arthouse mystery."

Verdict: 6.5/10 🌾🦗🕵️‍♀️
Atmospheric, unconventional, and bold in its execution. Perfect for indie fans looking for queer stories that venture beyond simple romance.

🔍 Did you know...?
The film picked up several awards at independent festivals (including the Los Angeles Film Awards), where it was praised for its screenplay and cinematography. Director Michael S. Ojeda, known for grittier action films like Avenged, experimented here with a much more subtle and psychological approach. Interestingly, the film touches on intersectional themes, blending queer narratives with cultural heritage and the struggles of agricultural America—a rare combination in this genre.
