๐Ÿ‘‘ REVIEW: Chasing Amy (1997)

My Take:
Holden (Ben Affleck) and Banky (Jason Lee) are comic book creators and best friends. Their world is turned upside down when Holden meets Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams)โ€”a brilliant, charismatic artist he falls for instantly. Thereโ€™s just one "catch": Alyssa is a lesbian. Holden decides to pursue his feelings anyway, leading to broken barriers but also a series of painful conflicts fueled by jealousy and fragile male ego. Itโ€™s a film about how love doesn't always adhere to strict definitions, and how toxic expectations can ruin the most beautiful connections.

What's Captivating: The dialogue. Kevin Smith is the king of "walk and talk" cinema, and the monologues in Chasing Amy are raw, honest, and funny. Alyssa is one of the most compelling female characters of the 90sโ€”she refuses to be pigeonholed and fiercely defends her right to exist on her own terms. Itโ€™s a landmark film for bisexual representation (even if the term isn't used frequently).

A Word of Caution: Perspective. The story is told through a heterosexual male lens, which means some of Holden's actions and arguments can feel problematic or frustrating by today's standards. However, that "imperfection" is exactly what makes the film so authentic in its depiction of human flaws.

Verdict: 8.0/10 โœ๏ธโค๏ธ๐ŸŒˆ
Awkward, funny, and at times brutally honest. A must-watch to understand the evolution of queer narratives in the mainstream.
