👑 REVIEW: Carmilla (2019)

My Take:
Lara (Hannah Rae) lives in total isolation in a countryside manor, overseen by a stern Governess (Jessica Raine). Her world is upended when a carriage accident nearby brings a mysterious stranger into their home—Carmilla (Devrim Lingnau). A deep fascination grows between them, quickly spiraling into something more. This isn't a traditional jump-scare horror; it’s a story of sexual awakening, rebellion against patriarchal rules, and how religious fear tries to stifle natural desire.

What's Captivating: The "dark cottagecore" aesthetic. Every frame is like a painting—light filtering through heavy drapes, dust motes dancing in the air, and close-ups of nature's decay. Devrim Lingnau is magnetic as Carmilla, striking the perfect balance between dangerous and alluring. The film masterfully captures the tension between curiosity and fear that defines first love.

A Word of Caution: It defines "slow-burn." The plot relies on glances, whispers, and atmosphere rather than high-octane action or CGI. If you’re expecting buckets of blood or Underworld-style fights, you might be disappointed. This is a psychological period drama with a supernatural chill.

Verdict: 7.5/10 🦇🕯️🩸
A sensual, atmospheric adaptation that proves vampirism remains the ultimate metaphor for unquenchable longing.
