👑 OUTERLANDS (2025)

“In a city of ghosts, found family is the only thing that’s real.”

VIBE CHECK:
SF Noir / Slow-Burn Drama / Non-Binary Perspective / Urban Loneliness

THE PLOT:
Cass (played with haunting precision by Asia Kate Dillon) is a non-binary gig worker drifting through San Francisco, juggling bartending shifts, nannying for the wealthy, and dealing just enough party drugs to cover rent. Cass lives in the quiet space between detachment and survival until a fiery one-night stand with coworker Kalli leads to an unexpected "gig": babysitting Kalli’s 11-year-old daughter, Ari. When Kalli suddenly disappears for a "job opportunity," Cass is thrust into a caregiving role that forces them to confront their own childhood abandonment and find a sense of belonging they didn't think they deserved.

THE QUEER & RADICAL ANGLE:

Authentic Non-Binary Lens: Director Elena Oxman centers the narrative on a non-binary experience that isn't about "the struggle of gender," but rather the struggle of living while non-binary in a harsh economic landscape.

The "Safe Ride" Wisdom: The inclusion of Lea DeLaria as a compassionate bank teller/community mentor adds a radical layer of intergenerational queer support, reminding Cass (and the audience) that queer survival is an inherited skill.

WHY IT KILLS:
It is a "vibes" movie in the best possible way. The cinematography by Lucia Zavarcikova avoids the typical tourist spots, instead focusing on the coastal fog, road tunnels, and fading queer landmarks. It feels like a spiritual successor to Nomadland but with a punk-rock, San Francisco heart. The chemistry between Dillon and young Ridley Asha Bateman (Ari) is the film's emotional anchor, turning a story of trauma into a beautiful testament to human connectivity.
