VIBE CHECK:
Contrived Melodrama / Forbidden Romance / High Stakes / Quiet Intensity

THE PLOT:
Lucy (Elliot Page) lives a life completely defined by tragedy and activism; she and her sister spend their days traveling to state prisons to protest the death penalty, fighting to save their father who sits on death row . At one of these high-tension demonstrations, Lucy locks eyes with Mercy (Kate Mara), a lawyer whose family stands firmly on the pro-capital punishment side of the aisle . Despite the massive political gulf between them, an undeniable, magnetic spark ignites . As they embark on a secret, complicated romance, Lucy must balance the consuming passion of first love with the ticking clock of her father's impending execution .

THE QUEER & RADICAL ANGLE:

The Radical Divide: The film is radical in its refusal to make the romance easy. It directly pits the characters' personal affection against their core moral and political ideologies, asking if love can truly bridge a systemic, structural divide.

Normalized Intimacy: It treats the relationship with a refreshing lack of sensationalism . The connection between Lucy and Mercy is presented as a legitimate, grounding force in a chaotic world, featuring non-exploitative sex scenes that serve as crucial emotional anchors .

A Sideways Look at Justice: Rather than preaching, the narrative acts as a quiet critique of the American penal system, weaving the harrowing reality of death row directly into the DNA of a traditional girl-meets-girl romance .

WHY IT KILLS:
The movie completely belongs to Elliot Page and Kate Mara, whose "exceptional chemistry" saves the film from slipping into standard indie overearnestness . Directed by Tali Shalom Ezer, the film captures a raw, authentic "Midwestern ordinary-ness" that grounds the heavier, melodramatic elements of the plot. Backed by an equally brilliant supporting performance from Amy Seimetz, it is a slow-burning, thoughtful romance that will linger with you long after the final verdict is delivered.
