Synopsis
Hoping to save the love of her life, Amy Wilcock tracks down her former partner, Beth, who has fled to a remote, isolated lighthouse with her young daughter following the tragic and mysterious death of her husband. Upon arriving, Amy discovers that Beth’s mental state is rapidly deteriorating, consumed by grief and erratic behavior. As strange, unsettling occurrences begin to haunt the lighthouse, Amy finds herself trapped in a high-stakes struggle—forced to discern whether a supernatural presence is tormenting the family or if Beth is spiraling into a deadly psychological breakdown.

Thematic & Cinematic Analysis
Claustrophobic Isolation: Coz Greenop leverages the stark, unforgiving coastal environment and the tight interiors of the lighthouse to create a suffocating sense of dread. The setting becomes a physical representation of the characters' trapped emotional states.

Complex Queer Dynamics: The narrative centers on the tumultuous, high-stakes relationship between Amy and Beth. Rather than treating their romantic history as a gimmick, the film uses their shared past to ground the emotional stakes as Amy tries to rescue Beth from her inner demons.

Grief and Mental Deterioration: At its core, Dark Beacon explores how unresolved guilt and grief can warp reality. Greenop blurs the line between a traditional ghost story and a psychological thriller, keeping the audience guessing about the true source of the threat until the climax.

Resourceful Indie Craftsmanship: Operating on a modest budget, the film relies heavily on natural light, atmospheric sound design, and strong central performances—particularly from April Pearson—to maintain tension without over-relying on cheap jump scares.

Verdict
Dark Beacon is a tense, atmospheric psychological thriller that showcases Coz Greenop's knack for building claustrophobic suspense. Anchored by solid performances and an eerie setting, it offers a compelling mix of relationship drama, psychological dread, and indie horror.
