π¬ MOVIE REVIEW: Chemical Hearts (2020)
Directed and adapted for the screen by Richard Tanne, Chemical Hearts is a grounded, melancholic young-adult romance based on Krystal Sutherland's novel Our Chemical Hearts. Moving away from glossy high school tropes, the film takes an emotionally restrained look at grief, heartbreak, and the turbulent biology of adolescent love.
The Plot
Henry Page (Austin Abrams) is a hopeless romantic high school senior who has never been in love, content with focusing his energy on becoming the editor of his school newspaper. His quiet routine is disrupted when Grace Town (Lili Reinhart), a guarded transfer student who walks with a limp and carries deep emotional scars, joins the paper staff.
As the two are chosen to co-edit the paper, Henry becomes drawn to Grace's enigmatic demeanor. However, as their bond grows, Henry learns that Grace is dealing with profound trauma and a devastating loss that she cannot easily move past, forcing both teenagers to confront the messy reality of healing.
Key Highlights & Tone
Sensitive Performances: Lili Reinhart delivers a subtle, vulnerable performance as Grace, capturing the heavy weight of trauma without slipping into melodrama. Austin Abrams brings a quiet sincerity to Henry as a teen realizing that love cannot fix everything.
Thoughtful Direction: Richard Tanne grounds the film in mood and atmosphere, favoring quiet conversations, moody lighting, and patient pacing over artificial plot twists.
Maturation of the YA Genre: Rather than painting first love as a fairytale, the film explores how teenage romance can be bittersweet, chaotic, and heavily tied to emotional recovery.
The Verdict
Chemical Hearts is a poignant, reflective YA drama that respects its audience's intelligence. Driven by delicate performances and Richard Tanne's understated direction, it serves as an honest exploration of grief and adolescent longing.
