👑 HIGH SCHOOL (2022)

“The music was loud, the feelings were louder.”

VIBE CHECK:
90s Grunge / Coming-of-Age / Indie Spirit / Gritty Nostalgia

THE PLOT:
Set in the suburbs of Calgary in the mid-90s, the story follows twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin. They are new kids at a brand-new high school, navigating the typical pitfalls of being fifteen: acne, drugs, rave culture, and the suffocating feeling of being "the twins." While they are drifting apart and finding their own separate social circles—and first loves—they discover an old guitar in their basement. It’s a slow-burn origin story not just of a band, but of two queer women finding their voices in a world that hasn't quite caught up to them yet.

THE QUEER & RADICAL ANGLE:

The Quiet Awakening: The show is incredibly respectful of the "questioning" phase. It captures the secret glances, the shared Walkman headphones, and the agonizing uncertainty of 90s queer life. It’s not about grand coming-out speeches; it’s about the radical act of realizing who you are in a basement bedroom.

The Mother Dynamic: Cobie Smulders gives a brilliant performance as their mother, Simone, showing the "radical" reality of a parent trying to grow and find her own identity while raising two rebellious, searching teenagers.

WHY IT KILLS:
It’s the ultimate 90s time capsule. From the baggy jeans and flannel shirts to the incredible soundtrack (featuring Smashing Pumpkins, Hole, and early Tegan and Sara demos), the atmosphere is flawless. It avoids the glossy "teen drama" tropes of modern shows like Euphoria, opting instead for a grainy, honest realism that feels like looking at old Polaroids. It’s a love letter to sisterhood and the power of a three-chord song.
