“Too wild to live, too beautiful to die.”
VIBE CHECK:
90s Biopic / Fashion Drama / Tragic Romance / Gritty Realism
THE PLOT:
Gia moves from the gritty streets of Philly to the high-fashion runways of New York City, quickly becoming the face of the late 70s. She is bold, rebellious, and unapologetically queer. But behind the camera, she is a lonely girl looking for a love she can't quite hold onto. As her romance with makeup artist Linda (Elizabeth Mitchell) flickers under the weight of Gia’s escalating drug use, we witness the tragic, meteoric rise and fall of a woman who was "too much" for a world that only wanted her image.
THE QUEER ANGLE:
The Central Heartbeat: The relationship between Gia and Linda is the soul of the film. It’s passionate, tender, and devastating. Linda is Gia's only anchor, and their chemistry is palpable.
Radical Authenticity: In 1998, seeing a mainstream film portray a lesbian relationship with such raw intensity and without a "happy ending" filter was revolutionary. Gia never apologized for who she loved.
WHY IT KILLS:
It is a visceral experience. The fashion photography sequences are electric, but the scenes in the dark corners of NYC are what stick with you. Angelina Jolie’s performance is a force of nature—she captures Gia’s desperation and magnetic charm so perfectly it feels like watching a ghost.
