Juraj Jakubisko (April 30, 1938 – February 24, 2023) was one of the most prominent Slovak film directors, screenwriters, and cinematographers. Often celebrated as the "Fellini of the East," his cinema is famous for its vibrant magical realism, poetic imagery, folk symbolism, and rich narrative textures. In 2000, film critics and journalists named him the Best Slovak Director of the 20th Century.

Cinematic Expressionism: Having studied photography before attending the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague, he frequently served as his own cinematographer, using vibrant color palettes, inventive camera movements, and allegorical visuals.
Censorship & Resilience: Emerging as part of the Czechoslovak New Wave in the late 1960s, several of his early films were banned during the communist "normalization" era following the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion.
